GoFarm's Composting Program

That's right, we started a composting program! We teamed up with the City of Golden Sustainability Office to offer free compost pick up service for GoFarm Shareholders.


Why are we focusing so much on composting this season?

  • About 50 percent of what we send to the landfill is actually compostable matter. When organic matter (as in, things that were once alive) go into a landfill, they enter an anaerobic environment (meaning devoid of oxygen), and create methane gas, which is a greenhouse gas that is 10 times more harmful that carbon dioxide). When you send things off to a landfill you are sending it to be entombed forever and allowing it to emit large amount of methane into the atmosphere.

So, what can we do about it?

  1. The best thing you can do is to EAT the food you buy. Keep inventory of the food in your kitchen, store items properly, and plan out your meals.

  2. Still have food scraps or leftovers that didn't get eaten? Try composting! You can create a compost at home, or bring your food scraps to GoFarm distribution sites (for GoFarm shareholders only).


How GoFarm composting works:

If you are shareholder and want to bring your food scraps to our distribution locations each week, here's the list of items we will and will not take:

Please bring food scraps in a compostable bag! We know compost can get dirty, but we want to keep our compost tins as clean as possible.


Try to not let food scraps sit on your kitchen counter for more than a week or two. If you need to wait longer than that before you drop them in a compost bin, freeze all food scraps and leftovers to avoid them smelling.
